Today's igniter was the book Cricket's Storm, written by Joy Cowley. Learners used egg cartons to create their 'critter' and their challenge was to design something that would keep their critter dry in the rain. In reality most spent the session on their critter. Those that accepted the challenge made everything from an umbrella to a decorative leaf to a 'hinged box'. Many lessons were learnt in this session e.g. the classroom set of children's scissors are not great for cutting anything 'thick', or for piercing. 5 year olds LOVE paint and put layer upon layer on the smallest of surfaces.
Our painted creations weren't dry by the end of our session so would be finished off back in their class tomorrow. At least one learner had only started school yesterday.
I am loving the rich language, laughter and wonderment and awe that is filling our Makerspace environment.
I wonder what the kids will call me, today one said "I'm looking for the Apple Teacher"......and another said "Are you Mrs Maker?" ......funny.
